Tips from a conversation with Apple

Three main models of deployment

1. The Basic
  • Up to 30 on a cart
  • Generally have one dedicated laptop that sits at the cart to act as the syncing laptop
  • Try to keep them as uniform as possible this way for management purposes

2. The Small Class Set
  • Maybe 5 or so
  • Teacher manages content by replicating what is on their iPad and iTunes to the others

3. One to One
  • Either their is a centralized syncing station or
  • Students completely manage the device on their own

Our schools are looking to blend approaches 1 and 2. A cart or two of 30 gets broken up and delivered to each room. The devices would get synced once a quarter maybe to a centralized station to receive district purchased apps and updates. The sync stations could be based on grade level or subject area. Teachers would be welcome to put their own content on the device provided they are aware that the apps would be wiped when a new sync occurs.

App Store Volume Purchase Program

  • It is recommended to have a centralized person in the building doing the purchasing for the VPP. This helps with bookkeeping.
  • Buy 20 copies of an app at half price.
  • Example: Buy Pages that you want on 50 devices. You get a sheet that gives you 50 redemption codes. You enter one redemption code on the syncing station. As the devices each get synced and get Pages on them, you mark the other 50 codes as used. It's the honor system for this set up.
  • If purchasing less than 20 copies, they are full price and you get a redemption code for each app purchased.
  • You need to purchase Volume Purchase iTunes Gift Cards in $100 increments.
  • Not the best for a haphazard approach

App Purchases

We have forms that teachers fill out for app requests. The app must be tied to curriculum. The app purchase gets approved by the principal and then sent to the tech department. They specify if it goes to a teacher iPad (which can be pushed out over the air to each teacher iPad) or to the carts.

Rental Program

  • Coming Soon
  • Lease to own, decreases cost and increases interest, but you own it
  • Lease to exchange, price lower, no interest rate, exchanged at the end of term
  • Apple Care is required and they strongly suggest additional expense for a cover
  • Accidental breakage might be an additional cost, water damage would probably be full out cost
